2012 Northwest Washington Synod Assembly

Nominations

In 2012, the Assembly will elect the Synod Secretary; 13 members of the Synod Council; and 8 members of the 2013 Churchwide Assembly (the bishop and the synod vice president are already members of the Churchwide Assembly because of their positions).

The Secretary of the Synod may be a lay or clergy member of the synod and is responsible for the minutes of the Synod Council and Synod Assembly, maintenance of the archives of the synod, and other matters related to the roster of the synod. The Secretary serves as a member of the Synod Council and the Executive Committee and must be a voting member of a congregation of the synod.

The Synod Council consists of the bishop, the officers of the synod (Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) and 10 - 24 additional members, with at least one youth member and at least one young adult member. The council meets every other month. These are the positions that will be open for election at the 2012 Synod Assembly:

1 Youth (not reached 18th birthday or graduated high school at time of election)

1 Active Associate in Ministry, Diaconal Minister, or Deaconess

1 Male layperson of color and/or male layperson whose primary language is other than English

1 Ordained minister of color and/or ordained minister whose primary language is other than English

2 to 4 Male laypersons (unrestricted)

2 to 4 Female laypersons (unrestricted)

3 Ordained ministers (unrestricted)

The number of male and female lay persons to be elected varies depending on the gender of the persons elected to the Youth and Associate in Ministry/Diaconal Minister/Deaconess positions. A total of six positions for unrestricted lay persons will be elected at this assembly.

According to the synod constitution, the Synod Council exercise trusteeship responsibilities on behalf of the synod, recommends program goals and budgets to the regular meetings of the Synod Assembly, carries out the resolutions of the Synod Assembly, provides for the annual review of the roster of ordained ministers and of other official rosters, issues letters of call to ordained ministers, associates in ministry, deaconesses, and diaconal ministers as authorized, fills vacancies until the next regular meeting of the Synod Assembly, reports its actions to the regular meeting of the Synod Assembly, and performs such other functions as are set forth in the bylaws of this synod, or as may be delegated to it by the Synod Assembly.

The voting membership from this synod of the 2013 Churchwide Assembly includes the bishop and the Vice President of the Synod, by virtue of their positions. An additional eight voting members will be elected by the 2012 Synod Assembly, five to be laypersons (half male/half female) and three to be ordained ministers. One of the eight voting members will be a youth or young adult and one will be a person of color and/or person whose primary language is other than English.
