Ecumenical Ministries in Northwest Washington
Church of the Apostles
Church of the Apostles (COTA) is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America and the Episcopal Church. Located in the Fremont neighborhood
of Seattle, COTA sees itself as a "future church with an ancient faith... in the
story of Jesus, we have glimpsed god's future and know that 'this could change
everything.'" COTA's statement of purpose is to "help God change
everything, by participating in God's future within today's culture and our
local zip code, in intentional community around Jesus Christ."

School of Theology and Ministry, Seattle University
The School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University fosters learning that
roots students in their own Christian faith tradition. It engages them in
vibrant dialogue with other faith traditions, helps them to appreciate the
diversity of God's manifold creation and prepares them for pastoral and
spiritual leadership. The School is a creative model of ecumenical cooperation,
working in a unique partnership with a Jesuit university and the churches of the
Pacific Northwest. It cherishes the mission of faith that does justice, respects
the dignity and gifts of every person, and attends to the life-fulfilling
dimensions of every culture. Denominational and liturgical coordinators from
each participating church body are linked with students to facilitate
communication and an appropriate grounding in the respective worship traditions
of each faith community.

The Catechumenate
The catechumenate is a process of faith formation and discipling that began in
the early centuries of the Christian Church has been reclaimed over the past
several decades. Mainline Protestant Christian churches have followed a renewal
of the catechumenate begun by the Roman Catholic Church and are using this
process for faith formation and spiritual development to reach out to 21st
century people who have little or no previous association with the Christian
faith.
The catechumenate is also being adapted in congregations for renewal in the
processes of the Baptism of infants and children, in confirmation ministry, and
in the affirmation of Baptism or the reaffirmation of the Baptismal covenant by
the already baptized. The process focuses on the development of the disciplines
of faith: corporate worship, the study of Scripture, prayer, and baptismal
living.
The Northwest Washington Synod's catechumenate events are often ecumenical and
carried out together with our full communion partners.
